Hospice of Santa Barbara is honored to have the artwork of the late John Schlesinger on display at the Leigh Block Gallery — located within Hospice of Santa Barbara, 2050 Alameda Padre Serra, Suite #100, Santa Barbara — through Jan, 24 2017.

HSB welcomed the community to an open house reception for the solo art exhibition on Oct. 27. The exhibit is available for viewing by calling (805) 563-8820. John’s sister Mary Schlesinger will donate 25% of the proceeds from the art sales to Hospice of Santa Barbara, Inc., a volunteer hospice organization.
Growing up suffering from a severe and debilitating case of Crohn’s Disease, John turned to painting at a young age. Knowing that the condition would lead to a life filled with challenges, John’s artwork at times often took on somber meanings, depending upon his health at the time. John created a diverse library of artwork, using mixed media, including paint, collage and assemblage. He continued producing his artwork through countless surgeries.
His sister Mary Schlesinger describes the exhibition at Hospice of Santa Barbara as a “trove of riches” that will showcase a small slice of her brother’s work, which has alternately been described as ethereal and mysterious, and hauntingly beautiful. This will be the first time many of the pieces have ever been on display.
